On June 13, 2026, Center for Uyghur Studies (CUS) Executive Director Abdulhakim Idris spoke at the 3rd International Uyghur Forum in Berlin, Germany, during the panel titled “From Surveillance to Criminalization: Attacks on Religious Freedom.”

Featuring a keynote address by Prof. Ahmed Shaheed, former UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, and contributions from other experts, the panel examined the CCP’s systematic repression of Uyghur religious identity and freedom of belief.

Drawing on recent testimonies and personal experience, Idris addressed the Chinese government’s restrictions on religious practice, separation of Uyghur families, forced labor, cultural erasure, and expanding campaign of transnational repression. He called on democratic governments, Muslim-majority countries, and faith communities worldwide to take stronger action to defend Uyghur religious freedom and advance accountability for the CCP’s ongoing crimes in East Turkistan.
